Italian-Australian First Communion Traditions: The Dress, the Feast, the Family
Communion as a Grand Occasion
For Italian-Australian families — particularly in Melbourne's western suburbs (Essendon, Sunshine, Footscray), Sydney's western suburbs (Leichhardt, Haberfield), Wollongong, and the Riverina — First Communion is not a quiet church affair. It is a grand family celebration with dozens or hundreds of guests, an elaborate feast, and a dress that is talked about for years.
The Dress
The communion dress in Italian-Australian tradition is typically a full-length, elaborate white gown with layered tulle, intricate lace, and a fitted bodice. The dress is chosen months in advance and is a source of enormous family pride. Our Anastasia, Vera, and Aurora styles are popular choices in this tradition.
The Feast and the Family
After Mass and photos, Italian-Australian families gather for a multi-course lunch or dinner — antipasto, pasta, roast meats, and a special communion cake. It is common to have 80–150 guests at the reception.
